Dispatches from Home – A Few Words From Job Jr.
One month ago, our in-ground pump, with which I water our lawn, rusted out and had to be replaced. About that time, lightning struck a towering pine tree in our neighbor’s yard, taking out our air conditioning, my answering machine, and my computer. The a/c was up and running by late afternoon the next day; the computer had to be replaced, and the answering machine is on my “to-do” list.
On top of that, my new car started doing the ditty-wah-ditty, as my sweet Granny from D’Lo would say, and that little ordeal prompted the purchase of a new set of Michelin tires. In addition to the new tires, little did I know an expensive visit to the dentist was in the making. While minding my own business, as I sat in my favorite chair enjoying one of my favorite movies, Sunset Boulevard, I bit down on a juicy bit of summer-ripened peach and hollered, “OUCH!”
The following day, it’s off to the ye ol’ dentist. He looks into my mouth and says, “I’ve got good news and bad news.” “Well, Doc,” says I, “let’s have the good news first.” The Doc says, “We’ve got plenty of novocaine.” “Novocain?” says I. “So what’s the bad news…” “You need a root canal,” says the Doc. After several hours in his chair—mouth agape, staring at the hair in his nose—my bank account is now severely depleted. 🤪 And now, I’m sitting here listening to the latest over the wireless about Hurricane Isaac, thinking, just call me Job Jr. 😂
Life is what it is, and we must all persevere as best we can. I’ve made all our storm preparations – water, food, battened down the hatches, and anchored my baby oak tree as best I could. That puppy cost me a thousand simoleons! 🙃 Gotta look after it as best I can. And then there’s Mom; I’m never sure what she does or does not comprehend. Not sure if she understands that a storm—not a Camille, thank you, Lord—but a storm still the same will soon come calling at our front door. But if I know her, she’ll do her bit and persevere under adversity like us all.
One exciting bit of info: This afternoon around 2-ish, a co-worker dashed into my office and said, “Come quick! Come look!” I did. And to my amazement, there was a perfect rainbow around the sun. I’m telling you…a perfect..round…rainbow! I’d never seen the likes of such.
However, when the storm’s rains begin to pound like pebbles against the house, and the winds lacerate the air, I’ll remember God’s rainbow—a sign of renewal and rebirth. Until we meet again, may God’s richest blessings fall on each of you. Good night and good luck. Big hug.
