The Good Book is filled with verses about respect. 1 Peter 2:17 states, “Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.”
This verse certainly indicates the importance of treating ALL persons with respect. It reminds us that respect should not be based on someone’s social position, political beliefs, or status. Instead, it’s a fundamental aspect of our relationships with others, making each individual feel valued and integral to our community as we traverse this rocky path called Life.
Colossians tells us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Clothing ourselves with these honorable qualities will shape our attitudes and actions toward others, inspiring us to treat them with respect and love.
In the weeks leading up to our contentious election, may we all vote our convictions. But let’s also be mindful of other people’s political thoughts and opinions, perhaps agreeing to disagree but remaining friends in the end. This way, we can feel good about our choices while also being considerate and respectful of those around us.
Ponder this and go forth
