Dispatches from Home – Life Magazine 1965 and A Being.

Greetings! In today’s local fish wrapper, there’s an article about Lennart Nilsson, a famed photographer. He most famously documented in photos life from conception to birth. His 1965 Life magazine story, “Drama of Life Before Birth,” sold eight million copies.
The pictures revealed a 61/2-week-old embryo with “clearly visible hands.” “At 18 weeks, he captured a fetus sucking its thumb.” But–interesting enough–the writer of the article referred to the embryos as “beings.” Beings? Here’s the quote: “Inside the magazine were portraits of the most ethereal quality, depicting beings never before seen…”
No Ms. Emily Langer of the The Washington Post, those “beings” were babies, wondrous creations of God.
