This and That – Earth-Shattering Culinary News!

While divesting individual cucumber slices of their thick, deep-green skin – which was laborious and time-consuming at best – I thought to myself, “Self, there’s gotta be a better way!”
Suddenly, up pops the Food Fairy (The Tooth Fairy’s fat sister) and sprinkles me with her magic dust. ( Sorry to my Evangelical friends for the fairy/magic references). Her sprinkling (Sorry to my Catholic friends for the sprinkling reference) bequeathed me with the following knowledge: Cut both ends of the cucumber with a sharp knife (dull ones take forever!).
Then, use one of those handy-dandy food peeler-thingamajigs to scrape the thick, deep-green skin from the unsuspecting cucumber! Done correctly, the cucumber will not know what has transpired and will still be as fresh as a daisy to eat.
Hummmm, speaking of daisies, I wonder if I could use that same technique on their stems, which make good salad filler? But that’s another culinary tidbit for another day.
For all you up-and-coming chefs like me, remember my old saying: Today the Kitchen . . . tomorrow the hotplate at Waffle House!
