Dispatches from Home – The Titanic and the Goodwin Family.

Greetings! Of all the many, poignant Titanic stories, to me, this is one of the saddest, the Goodwind Family. They were an entire family looking forward to a new life in the promised land, only to die screaming in the icy-cold waters of the North Atlantic. I can’t help but think of their final moments: Where were they? How long were they able to hold on to each other, as the great stern rose into the night sky? Who fell first into the water? And what could have been going through poor Mr. Goodwin’s mind, as they sat on the slanting deck watching the lifeboats drift slowing away from the once-grand, now-dying RMS Titanic? May God have mercy on their souls.

“Titanic Remembrance for March 24 – Today we honor Charles Edward Goodwin.

Charles was born on May 22, 1897, in Edmonton, Middlesex, England. His parents were Frederick and Agusta. Charles had five siblings (Lilian Agusta, William Frederick, Jessie Allis Mary, Harold Victor, and Sidney Leslie). He is the tall boy in the middle of the snap below. The youngest child is not shown in this snap. Charles’ father worked as a printer, compositor, and general laborer to support his family. His parents decided to emigrate the family to Niagara, NY where several of his father’s siblings had settled. Charles’ father had an opportunity to work in the power station at Niagara.

The Goodwin Family boarded the Titanic as third-class passengers. The entire family died in the sinking, none of their bodies were ever found except for the youngest child – two years old.

There is a memorial for the Goodwin family in the Church at Melksham Wiltshire.”

Kind regards, Anthony (AMGB)
