Dispatches from Home – A Theatrical Bio of a Smalltown Boy.

Greetings! I’ve been asked to write a theatrical bio for myself. I dislike bios because they always seem like a person is bragging. That’s not my intent. The little grey cells aren’t what they used to be. 🙃 Did I leave out something significant? 🤓 Later, Helpful Gaters!

By way of introduction, my name is Anthony Wayne Kalberg, and I am known among my friends as Andy. My dear friend Janie Still Walters introduced me to theater, and I was in my first Coastal production at Gulfport Little Theater in 1975.

Since then, I’ve been in many plays and musicals, portraying characters such as Scrooge, Christopher Wren, Captain Andy, the Cabaret Emcee, Renfield, Mr. Witherspoon, Pappy Yokum, and Lycus. I’ve also portrayed Merlin, Toby, Nathan Detroit, Fagan, Clad Hand, Alfred P.Doolittle, the Artful Dodger, Ko-Ko, Gorgeous Alexander, Og, Petey Fisk, and the Mayor of Munchkinland, along with many others.

I was GLT’s chairman in 1984, and I was the publicity manager for KNS Theatre for most of its lifespan. I’m currently on the board of the Walter Anderson Theater Project.

I’ve directed The Orphans, Tea and Sympathy (three times), and The Miracle Worker. I’ve designed and dressed the sets for all the shows I’ve directed, along with other sets, too many to mention. Costumes are a sideline.

My next stage direction, stage design, and stage dressing will be A Streetcar Named Desire for WAPT, which will be performed at the Mary C. Cultural Center in Ocean Springs in early March 2022.

Kind regards, Anthony

Broadway South’s 2015 production of Sunset Boulevard starring Terese Garguilo Evans and Cliff Thompson.

Center Stage’s 2018 production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Featuring the hilarious talents of Wayne Stevens, Chet Landry, and David Delk.
Center Stage’s 2018 production of The Royal Family. I was very pleased with this set dressing. It was impressive, to say the least.
KNS’s 1993 production of Lit’ Abner. What a fun role to play.
The Gulf Coast Opera’s 1993 production of Camelot. The beard itched. (LOL!)
