Dispatches from Home – Destroy History or Learn From It?

Greetings1
Thoughts on changing Mississippi’s state flag: I’m all for it–if and only if–those who are demanding its change will sign a document stating once it’s changed, the Confederate Witch Hunt will stop.
But I don’t think that will be the case. The following things that will fall victim to the witch hunt will be the Confederate monuments that dot Southern courthouse lawns. Is the Confederate carving on Stone Mountain safe? Are its days numbered? Will “Gone With The Wind” stop being shown on TCM due to its non-PC content, not to mention a tattered Confederate battle flag flapping in the wind in one touching scene?
Can’t happen? Don’t hold your breath. Blue’s not your fashion color.
As Americans, we strive (I think) to do the right thing. However, when we do, we often go too far in trying to eliminate that which we find offensive. For those who know me, you’re aware that I’m not a big Civil War buff, nor is it my favorite period in our history. And lest we Southerners forget – we backed the wrong horse and got our a-doubles stomped in the process.
But this purge of all things Confederate from the landscape is ridiculous. Hate does not start with a piece of cloth that flew over a country for only four years. It starts at home, in the hearts and minds of moms and dads, their children, relatives, and friends. So, do you want to change Mississippi’s state flag? Fine! Where do I sign up? But where is that other document to be signed? The one that says: The buck stops here, and so does the Confederate purge.
Later Gaters!
